From the moment he was born, I knew it was Treacle that I wanted...even though it had previously been decided that no puppies would be kept from this litter. The Phantom Litter had had a difficult start to life. We knew that Katie was expecting 7 puppies and, true to form, she went into labour on the expected day. Nothing seemed amiss at all. Then the puppies started to arrive - we'd let the Vet know (he had guests round for a pre Christmas dinner party) what was happening - and the each of the first three were stuggling from the very start. None of them lived for more than a few minutes.

Katie decided she needed a rest and thankfully the Vet agreed to see her. We quickly drove to the surgery where she was examined. The Vet (making a long story very much shorter) delivered the remaining 4 live puppies...some of his guests volunteered to help to get the puppies going....and when everything was OK, we were sent home. Treacle stole my heart. If you look at his face, you can see how he got his name (he is also known as 'Cheeks'). He did the most ridiculously amusing things when he was a young puppy. Treacle grew and did well in the show ring and had a very promising career ahead on him... then one day just before is third birthday he developed (or we noticed it for the first time) a right angled bend in his tail. Off to the Vets we went and close examination revealed that it was injured, either by a really bad knock or a puppy swinging on it. Morgan was a lively puppy at that time. Treacle had extensive treatment over a period of years but nothing did any good.....and he began to hate the idea of going to the vet. Enough was enough, so the treatment was stopped. We had been contacted by a semi-retired couple who lived about 10 miles away who were looking for an older Border Collie - again they were minus a special friend and know all about BC's - so it was agreed that they'd visit and see how things went. We've met some extraordinary people, and this couple are no exception. Things went very well indeed and not only was a trial period agreed for Treacle but for Biscuit as well. They boys left us for their new life and are having a whale of a time. |
