Expectations

Over the years expectations, real and perceived, have changed between potential puppy buyers/owners and breeders.

A lot of breeders have raised their game, so to speak, and quite rightly too. The more responsible breeders are taking advantage of the various health tests that are now available ...indeed some have been available for a number of years, others are more recently available. Potential new owners are learning about these tests and are expecting to find puppies that have been carefully bred through the selection of healthy, and health tested, parents whose offspring have been raised in safe, secure and comfortable surroundings where all reasonable measures have been taken to ensure, as far as possible, healthy, happy and well socialised puppies.

In return, breeders are expecting more from the potential new owners of their precious puppies. After all the care, time and trouble that has been taken in raising a quality litter, it is only fair to expect that new owners are going to continue with the love, care and attention to detail that started with the breeder.

At Manderian (A Kennel Club Accredited Breeder) we do take part in health testing, not only for the benefit of our own dogs and breeding program but for the Border Collie breed as a whole.

Our puppies are eye tested at +/- 6 weeks, BAER hearing tested whenever possible, and if necessary DNA tested if one of their parents is either a carrier or of unknown status of any disease for which a DNA test is available and appropriate to Border Collies.

Because we care about our dogs and the puppies we produce, we have a Puppy Sales Contract (recently revised to encompass advances in health tests now available) which all new owners are required to accept and sign. If you do not agree with anything in the contract, do not approach us for a puppy. There will be no negotiation in the terms and conditions of the contract which we believe to be fair to all parties and has the interests of the dog paramount.

Copy of the contract, signed by the breeder and the purchaser, will be forwarded to the Kennel Club to be retained with the individual dog record in case of confusion or dispute.

We will be pleased to discuss any of the above and answer any questions you may have. Please send us an email giving us your name, address, phone number, something about yourself and family, working arrangements, children, whether you've had a Border Collie before and your understanding/experience of the breed, the kind of life you offer to a puppy, an outline of exactly what you're looking for and we'll be pleased to call you back - it will in all likelihood be after 6 pm in the week or at a weekend - to discuss.

Enquiries that don't give us the detail we've asked for will be deleted.

You can view a copy of the contract by clicking on Puppy Sales Contract (both here and above). You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader v.5 or higher to access the pdf document.

It does not matter to us how far you may have travelled. The welfare of our puppies is paramount and if we are not completely certain about a potential new owner in any way, you will not be allowed to purchase one of our puppies.

You should also understand that even if we are satisfied and if you are approved, it does NOT imply that you are guaranteed to get a puppy from the litter you are interested in. For instance, there may not be enough puppies in the litter, there may not be enough girls or boys...and so on.

When we breed a litter, it is generally because we want to keep a puppy (or puppies) from that mating. You will understand that we always have first choice of any of the puppies in any litter we breed.
