CEA - March 2005 & NCL- August 2005
This picture was taken when Bert was 13 years old.
Over the last 18 months or so of his life, Bert suffered some health problems and responded well to treatment...but there comes a time when you realise that your best friend isn't benefitting from the treatment and you have to think the unthinkable. Bert made a huge impact on the lives of so many people. We had to love him enough to do the decent thing for him. Although he's gone from us, he lives on in his children, grand-children and great grand-children. We miss him every day.
We are grateful that the DNA tests for CEA & NCL became available when they. It did become a bit of a race against time to try to make sure that Bert was tested, and to have the results back, before it was too late.
Thankfully nothing in Bert's life was left undone.
Bert came to live here when he was 10 months old...he was only meant to stay for a few days...but those few days turned into 13 years or more. He was a typical little boy Border Collie, full of mischief and fun, fast as lightening and so loving. He enjoyed his 'dog jokes' and along with his litter brother Joshua (he came back here too, see Joshua's page) adored playing in water, particularly the stream of water from a hosepipe, or playing out in the rain catching the droplets falling from the shed roof. We have so may wonderful priceless memories of the brothers playing to their hearts content.
Along with the rest of our breeding dogs (past and present, still living with us) Bert was DNA tested for the CEA gene in March 05 and the NCL gene in August 2005. We are delighted to report that Pencaitland Rob-Roy (Bert) is 'Normal' i.e. he does NOT have any copies of faulty genes to pass on to his puppies. This makes his puppies by Katie (Loracian First Impression), CEA & NCL Normal by parentage.
His first litter was to an unregistered bitch called Sam. Her owners had her eye tested to meet the condition of the mating.
Litters 2 and 3 were to our Katie (Loracian First Impression) this produced some excellent puppies. See the Mystic & Phantom litters.
Bert's 4th litter was to a bitch bred by Gill Walford of the Halladown affix.
Lucy - Darian Indian Summer over Manderian was his final 'wife'. The theme for this litter was Doubles or Two's
All of his children were, and are, beautiful. Two of his youngest children - Fluke and Ripley - are doing very well in Agility.
Bert sired Black/White, Blue/White, Black Tricolour, Blue Tricolour and Sable/White puppies...depending on who he was mated to.
